フレンチタッチサウンドで魅了する 「OKAY CACTUS」

2018年に初EPをリリースした後、待望のフルアルバム『THE  SHADES AND THE GAMES 』が6月18日にリリースされるフランス人アーティスト「OKAY CACTUS」にインタビューをおこないました。

ーーまず、音楽に興味を持ったきっかけを教えて下さい。

僕が音楽にハマったのは13歳の時、フランスのTVでフェニックスが『Lisztomania』を演奏してたのを見てからだよ。すごくかっこよくて、それから彼らに関連するバンドを色々探し始めて出会ったのが、ダフト・パンクとフレンチ・タッチムーブメント。それはすぐに僕の中で、自分が音楽に捧げることになる「証」みたいなものになったんだ。その時にはもうビデオゲームをする時間も減って、友達とバンドも始めてたしね。それからもっともっと、音楽にのめり込んでいったんだ。

ーー色んな音楽を聴いてきた中で、一番影響を受けたミュージシャンは？

もちろんフェニックスとダフト・パンク。彼らはいつだって僕の一番のインスピレーションだよ！僕のほとんどの曲で彼らの影響を聞くことができると思うけど、それは僕が隠したいことではなく、むしろ見せていきたいことなんだ。

ーーもうすぐ新しいアルバムをリリースされるんですよね。アルバムについて教えて下さい。

『The Shades And The Games』は僕の初めてのフルアルバムなんだ！2018年から2020年の間に、僕のベッドルームでレコーディングとミックスした9曲を収録してる。このアルバムでは、自分の好きな音楽のジャンルをまとめたことで生まれるランダムな繋がりが、どんなところへ僕を導いてくれるのかを見たかったんだ。それとこのアルバムは、パンデミックが起きる前、2018年と2019年にミュージシャン仲間とオフヴォーカルなしでライヴしたことにも影響を受けてる。その経験でグルーヴやアレンジ、音楽全般についてもよく学べたよ。

最終的には、前のエレクトロ/ファンクなスタイルから、インディー指向の強いサウンドに仕上がったかな。と言うのもLP版はすごく自由に制作できたから、曲も長めになってインストの部分も増えたんだ。（それに対して、初めてのEP版は全曲レディオ・レディー（3分くらいの曲）だったなと思う。）最新シングル『Only Love』はその良い例で、5分半もあるんだ！でも、どういう訳か僕のオーディエンスはそれが好きみたいで、長くても問題にならないと思ってるよ。

ーー自分のモットーにしてることは何かありますか？

「エビデンス（証）と共に制作すること」

もし浮かんだアイデアが「これだ！」って思えるような正しいアイデアじゃないことが明白なら、そのアイデアはもう取っておかないんだ。それは結果的に、すごくゆっくりとしたプロセスを踏むことにはなるけど、僕は自分が発信してること全てを誇りに思うし、みんなも僕の音楽が100％真実だって感じると思うんだ。それに僕はアイデアを早く形にすることが苦手だから、この哲学は僕にはとても合っているってことだね！

ーー自分を一番幸せにしてくれるコトは？

良いアイデアを持っていることが一番ワクワクする。この前『Only Love』のミュージックビデオを編集してた時、画面の中に作った歌詞用のスペースでテトリスができることを見つけた時は嬉しくて、自分の部屋でジャンプして踊っちゃったよ。そのビデオを見てもらえれば、僕の言ってる意味が絶対分かるよ。

ーーコロナウイルスが蔓延するタフな状況を通じて、気持ちの面で何か変わったことはありますか？音楽に対する気持ちはどうでしょう？

最初に、アルバム制作に集中することで自分の健康を保てたし、これからも保ちたいと思ってる。それに楽曲制作をすることは、あの状況を忘れる良い方法にもなったよ。でも時間が経つにつれ、悪いバイブスは生まれるし、怒る狂う人もいて・・・とにかくただ楽しみたいって時に、エネルギーを探して音楽に時間を費やすのが難しいことはあったかな。早くこの状況が終わるといいよね。

ーー音楽のキャリア以外で熱中していることはありますか？

Twitchをよく見てるのと、政治と歴史についても大切にしているよ！

ーー日本にはどんな印象がありますか？

日本には行ったことないけど、すごくクールだよね！いつか旅ができるといいな。

この前、個人的にインターネットを通して日本の音楽とヴェイパーウェイブみたいな、インターネットの音楽ジャンルを発見したんだ。それで大抵のフューチャー・ファンクが日本のシティ・ポップと80年代のファンクをサンプリングしてて、僕もそのジャンルに興味が湧いたから聴き始めたところ。アルバムに入ってる『Radio Thermidor』と『Up To Something』は両方とも、日本のジャズ・ファンクの曲をサンプリングしてるよ！

What made you interested in music ?

I got into music at the age of 13 when I watched Phoenix performing « Lisztomania » on french TV. I loved it so much, then i started to look for any band related to them in every way, discovering  Daft Punk and the whole « french touch » movement. It quickly became an evidence that I would dedicate myself to music at this moment, as I was  starting a band with my friends, playing less video games – into which i was really at the time –  and more and more music. 

Who has influenced you the most? 

It is clear that Phoenix and Daft Punk are still my biggest all-time inspirations ! I believe that you  can hear their influence on almost every song of mine, but that is not something i want to hide, it  would be desperate trying to.

Please tell us about the new songs that will be released this time.

« The Shades And The Games » is my first full-length album ! It features 9 songs that i wrote,  recorded and mixed in my bedroom between 2018 and 2020. 

I tried to sum up the genres of music that I like the most, making random associations, and see  where it would lead me. I was also very influenced by the work that I did in 2018/2019 – before  the pandemic – playing my songs live with musician friends, and zero backing tracks. I learned a lot about groove, arrangement and music in general through that experience. 

It ended up in a switch from my prior electro/funk style to a more indie-oriented sound, with  longer songs, more instrumental sections, the LP format allowing me a lot of freedom (whereas I  felt like every song must have been a radio-ready single when i was composing my first EP). My last single « Only Love » is a great example of that : it’s five minutes and a half long ! But i don’t believe that this is a problem, my audience seems like it somehow. 

Lastly i’m singing on every track this time ! I worked on it so much, it would have been a disaster a  few years ago.

What is your motto ? What is the reason for that ?

« Working with the evidences ». 

If it’s not obvious that an idea is not THE right idea, i don’t keep it. It results in a very slow process,  but in the end i’m proud of everything i’m releasing and people may feel that my music is 100%  truthful. Also i’m really not good at finishing ideas fast ; let’s say that this philosophy works well for me ! 

What makes you the happiest ?

Having good ideas is what excites me the most. When editing my new music video for « Only  Love » the other day, I jumped and danced in my room after finding out that I could do a Tetris  game inside the space dedicated to the lyrics – that makes sense if you watch the video, i assure  you.

Through the tough situation because of the novel coronavirus, how’s your feeling changed ? Has  your feeling about music changed ? 

At first, focusing on my album allowed me to stay healthy : i still had this goal in mind and working  on it was a good way to forget the situation that we were all in. But the time passing by, the bad vibes, people around going mad… It was harder to find the  energy and spend time on my music, when all i wanted was to chill out. Hopefully this whole  situation will be over soon ? 

Except for your music carreer, is there anything that you are into ? 

I watch a lot of twitch content, and i care a lot about politics and history too ! 

What’s your impression of Japan ? 

I never went to Japan but it seems to be sooo cool, i hope that i’ll have the opportunity to travel in this country one day ! 

I personally discovered japanese music through internet culture ; also internet genres like  vaporwave and mostly future funk sample a lot of japanese City Pop and 80s funk, so i became  interested in those genres too, and started listening to them. 

On my album, the songs « Radio Thermidor » and « Up To Something » both sample japanese jazz funk songs in that way !
